La corsa all’Oscar per Il caso Spotlight sembrerebbe non avere più ostacoli, Revenant – Redivivo a parte. Il film di Tom McCarthy si è aggiudicato, infatti, ben cinque Independent Spirit Awards: miglior film, miglior regia, miglior sceneggiatura, miglior montaggio e miglior cast.
Briel Larson si è aggiudicata quello per la miglior attrice per Room (ormai ha vinto tutto ciò che poteva vincere), film per il quale Emma Donaghue ha vinto il premio per la miglior sceneggiatura d’esordio, mentre Idris Elba, pur non avendo ottenuto la nomination all’Oscar, ha vinto il premio come miglior attore non protagonista per Beasts of No Nation, film per il quale il giovane Abraham Attah ha vinto il premio come miglior attore protagonista.
Lo splendido The Look of Silence, il documentario di Joshua Oppenheimer candidato all’Oscar, ha vinto il premio come miglior documentario; Il figlio di Saul, come da programma, ha vinto il premio come miglior film straniero.
